California City, California. California City dates back to 1958 when Professor Nat Mendelsohn purchased 80,000 acres of land located in the Boron Valley. He had plans to model a desert city which is now California City.
Within the first year of development 20 homes were constructed and 28 more homes were in the works for being constructed. The California City Inn opened it doors for the first time, and lots of land were offered for sale.
By 1959 the town was in the process of setting up 4 stores, a supermarket, a gas station, and a motel. Two lakes were formed along the Kern River to allow residents opportunities for residents.
Since its inception in 1958 California City now has a large central park with a man made lake, a mountain ski resort, a reservoir water system/basin, a golf course with a pro shop (Par 3 Golf Course), a Grand Holiday Inn, a Showcase theatre, the Aspen Mall, a Senior Center, and some nice restaurants.
California City is home to the Naval Ordinance Test Station (NOTS), The Maturango Museum, the Tierra del Sol Golf Course, the Silver Saddle Ranch & Club, California City Airport, one of the headquarters of the Corrections Corporation of America, The Great Basin Air Pollution Control Board, and one of the new Rite-Aid prototype corner stores, the first of its kind.
The Educationally inclined may wish to check out Cerro Coso College which is located in California City.
The city is in the process of adding more restaurants, a hospital, an Inn at Tierra del Sol, a new Matrix Motor Company facility, Matrix Glass Division's Industrial Park facility, a new aviation business, a woman's clothing manufacturer factory, California City Studios, and the list goes on.
The job growth and potential is amazing in California City. With the economic crisis, many are heading to California City, one of the few cities that actually have over 15% job growth within the next 5-10 years, and the city is continuing to grow as additional homes are being built to accommodate for the influx of jobs.
