Compton, California. The area of Compton became a reality when land was granted in 1784 to Juan Jose Dominguez by the Spanish Crown; the tract of land was originally called Rancho San Pedro. Compton was named for Griffith D. Compton. He led a group of families, searching for a milder climate, to the area in 1867. Compton is the 2nd oldest city in the county and the 7th to be incorporated. Compton was incorporated on May 11, 1888.
Compton is located near Los Angeles in the Los Angeles basin as a residential and manufacturing area. It is bounded by Los Angeles County on the west and north and by Long Beach and Carson on the south. Compton is located many other well known cities such as: Long Beach, Los Angeles, East Compton, and West Compton.
