Costa Mesa, California. It was on May 11, 1920 that Harper officially changed its name to Costa Mesa, which means coastal tableland in Spanish. The area was a well known agricultural community that would grow sweet potatoes, corn, tomatoes, strawberries, and apples. On June 29, 1953, Costa Mesa was incorporated and City Council-Manager form of government was chosen. The new City had a population of 16,840. Within 35 years the population had risen to 90,000.

Today, Costa Mesa is a major commercial and industrial center of Orange County. The City is home to a regional symphony orchestra and the South Coast Repertory Theater. They are also home to the Orange County Performing Arts Center. This center includes a 3,000 seat facility which was completed in 1985, and a 1,000 seat auditorium slated for future development.
