Port Hueneme, California. 'Hueneme' is derived from a Chumash Indian word meaning "half-way" or "resting place." It is believed that central California's original inhabitants the Canalinos Indians, stopped at Point Hueneme as they passed between today's Point Mugu and the mouth of the Santa Clara River.

The idea for building the Port was the direct result of a coastal exploration by Thomas Bard in 1867. Taking advantage of Hueneme Canyon, a wharf was constructed in 1872 to move goods between the coast and ships off shore. By the early 1920s, agriculture in Ventura County was becoming more diversified. Citrus would become one of the chief crops and the impact of citrus would be immediate and long lasting. Sunkist became one of the village's largest employers.

Today the area is filled with tourists and new business and continues to get more diverse as time goes on. The homes in the area are beautiful and it is easy to find prices to suit various incomes. Most of the homes available are single family detached homes, though there are other options, such as rentals, townhouses, and condos.
