Ventura, California. Ventura was founded more than 1,500 years ago as a Chumash Village. It takes its modern name from Mission San Buenaventura, founded by Franciscan friars under the Spanish crown in 1782. After a brief period of Mexican rule, Ventura became a bustling frontier town following California statehood in 1850.

The city is located between two richly endowed valleys, the Ventura River and the Santa Clara River, and so rich was the soil that citrus grew better here than anywhere else in the state. The growers along these rivers got together and formed Sunkist, the world's largest organization of citrus production. Ventura has grown steadily ever since. In 1920 there were 4,156 people and by 1950 the population reached 16,643. In the last twenty years the population has quadrupled to approximately 102,000.

The city and surrounding area offer virtually unlimited opportunities for recreation and entertainment for all ages. Ventura Harbor is a great place for the whole family. Families can also rent kayaks or paddle boats to explore the harbor and shore on their own or you can take a guided cruise of the harbor.

Ventura is a multifaceted city with a diverse cultural scene. Ventura's calendar is filled with music, theater, dance, art exhibits, festivals, and crafts every month of the year. After dark, residents and guests are able to choose from entertainment options including clubs, bookstores and coffee houses with live entertainment, swing dancing, and many other activities.

The Ventura area offers affordable homes that are built on tree lined streets with friendly neighbors that actually know your name. The schools are excellent and the area is one that residents are proud to help maintain.
